Lunch, snacks, beverages (lunch can be provided upon request) The Gulf Island's are definitely the place to be right now......Over the last handful of days, the chinook fishing has been very consistent with excellent numbers of fish in the 10 to 30 pound range.  We have averaged 10 to 15 hook ups a day this week. The fish have been scattered from Nanaimo all the way down to Galiano Island.  We have been focusing our efforts off the eastern shoreline of Gabriola Island. The fish have been all over the place, you basically have to pick your spot and put your time in and you will get rewarded.   We have been fishing a couple miles off the Gabriola shoreline in 500 to 1200 feet of water.   Spoons have been outproducing everything over the last couple weeks.  The nice thing about fishing the Gulf Island's is their is really no need to run any bait as the fish respond better to spoons and hootchies in the spring and early summer.  We have been doing well on the larger 4 inch spoons.  The Irish Cream, No Bananas, and Kitchen Sink have all been producing behind  either the Glow Green or Chartreuse Gibbs Highliner flashers.  The fish have been pretty scattered in the water column.  We have hit fish as shallow as 60 feet and as deep as 200 feet.  It is a good idea to stagger your gear until you key in on a depth range. There has been quite a few hatchery coho getting caught off Gabriola Island this week.  There has been a few real nice ones up to 5 pounds caught and released.  Retention of hatchery coho opens up on the 1st of  June so it looks like there may be some opportunity to fish for them as well. The local fishery has really tanked over the last few days.  There is still the odd fish being picked up off the South End of Bowen, but it is safe to say that the best days are now behind us.  This is not surprising as our fishery of the hump always slows right around now.  In coming weeks we will start to see the first waves of coho salmon off of West Vancouver.   With the snow pack already significantly reduced, it is likely we will see numbers of coho start to really build between the 20th and 30th of June.  Until the latter part of June, we highly recommend 10 hour trips to the Gulf Islands. Our 23 foot Grady White,  "Van Herring", has been re-powered for this season with a brand new 300 hp Yamaha four stroke.  This engine is absolutely amazing and extremely powerful.    We are very excited!  It feels like the Gulf Island's are that much closer with all the speed and power!
